The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) launched its Career Readiness Initiative in 2015. This initiative was created to address a critical need for both new college graduates and the professionals who guide their career development and recruit them. The goal was to establish a shared understanding of what is essential for launching and developing a successful career. This included creating a common vocabulary for discussing expectations and needs, and defining a core set of competencies upon which a successful career could be built.

The initial task force, composed of NACE members from career services and university relations and recruiting, developed the foundational career readiness definition and associated competencies. In 2017, a subsequent task force of members reviewed and updated these competencies, incorporating feedback from members who were actively using them with students.

Following the initial launch, NACE partnered with SkillSurvey to identify and validate specific behaviors associated with each competency. In 2020, a member task force undertook a further review and revision of the competencies. Simultaneously, NACE and SkillSurvey completed a significant phase of their validation effort to identify sample behaviors. As part of this iterative process, the task force formulated recommendations for revisions and presented them to the broader NACE membership for feedback. Over 300 members contributed recommendations and comments, and the revised competencies reflect these valuable member insights.
