As the Health System HIM Director of Coding, you will be at the helm of all medical coding operations across NYU Langone Health. This leadership position demands a seasoned professional to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance of coding for a wide spectrum of services. From inpatient and outpatient care to specialized areas like the Emergency Department, oncology, research, and ancillary services, your expertise will be crucial. Key Responsibilities for the HIM Director of Coding:

  • Leadership and Team Management: Directly lead and manage the medical coding team, providing mentorship, support, and opportunities for professional advancement. Ensure optimal staffing levels, comprehensive training programs, and adherence to certification requirements for all coding professionals. Partner with clinical staff to enhance clinical documentation practices, directly supporting accurate coding and optimal reimbursement. Serve as the subject matter expert for all coding-related inquiries, providing authoritative guidance on complex coding scenarios.
  • Data Analysis and Strategic Planning: Analyze coding data to identify critical trends, opportunities for improvement, and potential risk areas. Prepare and present regular, insightful reports on coding accuracy, compliance metrics, and productivity to senior leadership. Collaborate effectively with data analysts and IT teams to implement advanced coding and revenue cycle reporting tools. Minimum Qualifications for Your HIM Career Advancement:

    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification plus Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification.
    • Master’s Degree in a health-related field plus 5 years of progressive experience in HIM.
  • Seven years of progressive experience in Health Information Management, including at least 5 years in a leadership role within an academic medical center or a large healthcare system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory requirements and payer-specific coding guidelines, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurers.
  • In-depth understanding of federal, state, and payer reimbursement methodologies, including Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) and severity systems, as well as universal coding practices and guidelines.
  • High level of clinical knowledge enabling collaborative participation with clinicians.
  • Strong critical thinking, data analysis, financial acumen, and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional ability to integrate clinical, coding, and reimbursement knowledge.
  • Proficiency in recognizing payer and DRG differences and their implications for hospital financial and reimbursement processes.
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Outlook, Office, Excel, and PowerPoint is essential.
