Melissa Ebanks’ journey is a powerful testament to perseverance and the transformative impact of education. As a resident of Camillus House Verde Gardens and a dedicated single mother, Ebanks faced significant hurdles in her pursuit of a better life. Driven by the desire to inspire her seven daughters, she overcame numerous challenges to graduate from Florida Career College with a degree in medical billing and coding.
“I’m trying to inspire my daughters to pursue their education so they can work in the careers of their choice,” Ebanks stated, highlighting her motivation. Balancing the responsibilities of raising a large family, including two children with disabilities, she affectionately refers to her family as her “cheerleading squad,” acknowledging their crucial support.
Ebanks’ story began with immigration from the Grand Cayman Islands to the U.S. as a young child. Raised by her grandmother after her parents returned to the islands, she experienced a happy childhood but faced early adulthood challenges as she started her own family at a young age. This led to periods of homelessness, forcing her and her daughters to rely on the hospitality of friends and family and endure repeated evictions. Eventually, they sought refuge in a shelter before finding stability at Verde Gardens, a Camillus House facility providing townhomes for families.
Moving to Verde Gardens felt like a dream come true for Ebanks, a significant upgrade from shelters. However, new challenges arose when unexpectedly high water bills threatened their newfound stability. Facing disconnection and unable to afford the exorbitant costs, Ebanks demonstrated resilience. “My kids all accepted the situation as I had to take them to a hotel for baths,” she recounted. Support from her older daughters’ father with bottled water provided temporary relief.
With the intervention of Camillus House case managers, Ebanks accessed utility bill assistance from partner agencies. Recognizing the severity of the situation, Camillus House also contributed to reducing the debt and provided invaluable counseling on managing household expenses and monitoring water consumption. This support underscored Camillus House’s commitment to holistic assistance, extending beyond housing to address unique challenges faced by residents like Ebanks.
Despite facing “many hungry days” and lacking a support system in the past, Ebanks remained steadfast in her educational pursuits. While attending college, she initially worked in food service after applying for numerous positions. Her medical billing and coding degree from Florida Career College now opens doors to a career directly aligned with her field of study, marking a significant step towards professional fulfillment. The path to graduation was arduous, filled with moments of doubt and tears shed in private. Ebanks’ faith and prayers were constant sources of strength throughout her journey.
